Created as part of the world celebration of completin of the Panama Canal, to host an exposition in 1915, Balboa Park attracted people who loved the city so much they never went home, but stayed to make homes for themselves in the bustling city. San Diego's coastal position at the southwest corner of our border makes it an ideal home for a thriving naval military complex. You can find the 11th Naval District Headquarters, Miramar Naval Air Station, the Naval Training Center, Camp Pendleton and the Marine Corps Recruit Depot. You can visit The San Diego Aircraft Carrier Museum which contains the U.S.S. Midway Aircraft Carrier to get a good sense of the Naval history of the city.
